Russky Island
Island Island near Vladivostok connected by the Russky Bridge
Adjacent to Vladivostok and linked by a long cable-stayed bridge, Russky Island hosts university campuses, conference facilities and coastal trails; visitors combine city trips with beach walks and cliff viewpoints.
Russky Island is a large island in Peter the Great Bay off Vladivostok in Primorsky Krai, Russia. It gained major new infrastructure in 2012 when facilities were developed for the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation summit.
The island features coastal cliffs, beaches and newly built public and university facilities, with the island linked to mainland Vladivostok by the long cable-stayed Russky Bridge (main span 1,104 m). Road access across the bridge is the primary way visitors reach island viewpoints and the Far Eastern Federal University campus.
Historically the island held military facilities and seasonal settlements; large-scale civilian development accelerated ahead of the 2012 APEC summit. The bridge and university buildings are the most visible recent changes.
Russky Island sits immediately southeast of central Vladivostok across the Eastern Bosphorus strait and forms part of the city’s maritime landscape. It is administered from Vladivostok and is accessible by the bridge or by sea.
- Best viewpoint: The bridge offers dramatic views back to central Vladivostok from the island and is a common photo point for visitors.
What to See #
- Russky Bridge: A cable-stayed crossing completed for the 2012 APEC summit with a main span of 1,104 metres, noted for being the longest cable-stayed span at the time of opening.
- FEFU campus: A modern university campus built on the island for the 2012 APEC summit that hosts parts of the Far Eastern Federal University and associated facilities.
How to Get to Russky Island #
Russky Island is connected to Vladivostok by the Russky Bridge. From central Vladivostok you can drive across the bridge (a short 20-30 minute drive depending on traffic) or take municipal buses/minibuses that run from the city to the island; once on the island points of interest are reached by short drives or on foot.
Tips for Visiting Russky Island #
- Use the Russky Bridge to reach the island from Vladivostok-regular buses and taxis cross the bridge and are faster and more reliable than seasonal ferries.
- Visit on a weekday morning to avoid weekend crowds at the beaches and the Far Eastern Federal University campus; early light gives the best photo views of the bridge and city skyline.
