Russell Cave National Monument is a U.S. National Monument in northeastern Alabama protecting a prehistoric limestone rock shelter with a long record of human occupation. It is managed by the National Park Service and interpreted as an archaeological site rather than a show cave.

The protected shelter contains deeply stratified deposits with stone tools, bone, and other cultural material that document repeated human use over millennia. On-site interpretation explains excavation findings and the types of artifacts recovered; there is a short marked trail and a small visitor area rather than developed tourist facilities.

Archaeological investigations and controlled excavations have produced the primary information about the site and its sequence of occupations. The monument was established to preserve those deposits and to provide public access and interpretation of the research.

The monument sits in a wooded, hilly area of northeastern Alabama within Jackson County, in a rural landscape of mixed forest and small valleys. The nearest larger communities are in the broader region of northeastern Alabama and northwestern Georgia; the site is accessed via local roads and has a short trail from the parking area.

  • Archaeological importance: The site preserves a long, continuous archaeological record of prehistoric occupation in a limestone rock shelter, giving insight into thousands of years of Native American use.
