How to Get to Rundu
Rundu is served by a small regional airport and overland connections from Windhoek and northern Namibia. Most international visitors arrive via Windhoek (Hosea Kutako, WDH) and take a domestic flight or a long coach ride north to reach the town.
Rundu Airport (N/A): Rundu has a small domestic airport right by the town that receives scheduled flights from Windhoek and occasional charter services. From the apron to the town centre it’s a short drive-expect a metered taxi or pre-arranged transfer for about NAD 50-150 and 5-15 minutes depending on where in town you are.
Hosea Kutako International Airport (WDH): If you arrive from overseas you’ll land at Windhoek’s Hosea Kutako International Airport (WDH) and then connect onward. Domestic flights to Rundu take roughly 1 h 15-90 min; typical one-way fares vary a lot by season but commonly fall in the NAD 1,200-2,800 range. Alternatively you can transfer from WDH to Windhoek city (airport shuttle or taxi ~NAD 150-300, 40-60 min) and continue overland by coach or rental car to Rundu.
Train: There is no direct passenger train service to Rundu. Namibia’s rail network does not provide regular passenger connections into the Kavango region, so trains are not a practical option for reaching Rundu.
Bus: Intercity coach companies and regional operators run scheduled services between Windhoek and northern towns, and you can find direct or indirect coach services to Rundu. Typical coach journeys from Windhoek take about 8-11 hours depending on route and stops; fares commonly range from about NAD 250-500. Within the region, shared minibuses and regional coaches provide shorter hops between towns and settlements-book locally for schedules and prices.
How to Get Around Rundu
Rundu is easiest to navigate by car or taxi; self-drive gives the most flexibility for exploring the Kavango. The town centre is compact enough for walking short distances, but regular taxis and shared minibuses are useful for longer journeys or reaching lodges outside town.
- Domestic flights (NAD 1,200-2,800) - Scheduled domestic flights connect Windhoek and Rundu and are the quickest way to reach the town from the capital-flight time is roughly 1 h 15-90 min. Flight frequency is limited and varies by season, so book in advance. Expect small aircraft and minimal airport facilities on arrival.
- Car rental / Self-drive (NAD 600-1,500 per day) - Self-driving is a very practical way to explore Rundu and the wider Kavango region; roads immediately around town are sealed but many rural roads are gravel and can be rough, especially in the rainy season. A 4x4 is recommended if you plan to go off the main routes or visit lodges along the river. Fuel and rental availability are limited-book a vehicle in Windhoek or ahead of time if arriving by air.
- Taxis & private transfers (NAD 50-200) - Metered taxis and private transfers are the most convenient way to get from Rundu Airport or between points in town; fares are reasonable for short trips. Always agree a price or ask for the meter to be used for longer trips. Many lodges and guesthouses offer pre-arranged airport pickups, which can be easier on arrival.
- Shared minibuses / regional coaches (NAD 20-400) - Shared minibuses (commuter taxis) and regional coaches connect Rundu with surrounding towns and villages; these are the budget option for locals and adventurous travellers. Comfort varies and schedules can be irregular-departures often wait until vehicles are full. Coaches for longer intercity trips are more comfortable and run on main routes, but book ahead in high season.
- Bicycle (NAD 0-150 (rental)) - Cycling can be a pleasant way to explore the town centre and riverfront; traffic is generally light but roads may lack dedicated cycle lanes. Use caution on busy stretches and avoid unpaved rural roads unless you have a suitable bike. Bring water and sun protection-shade is limited.
- Walking - Rundu's central areas are compact and walkable for short trips, especially along the riverfront and market areas. Walking is the easiest way to explore the immediate town centre, but distances between attractions and lodges can be large, so combine walking with taxis or a hire car for wider exploration.
