Rumtek Monastery, officially the Rumtek Dharma Chakra Centre, is a major Tibetan Buddhist monastery in Sikkim, India, and the principal seat in exile of the Karma Kagyu lineage. The complex was re-established in the mid-20th century under the 16th Karmapa and functions as an active religious and cultural centre.
The present Rumtek complex was built and developed in the 1960s under the direction of the 16th Karmapa, who established it as the continuation of the original Rumtek monastery in Tibet. Since then it has served as the monastery and headquarters for the Karma Kagyu community outside Tibet and has been the focus of religious activity and monastic education.
Rumtek sits on a hillside in eastern Sikkim, India, roughly 20-25 kilometres from the state capital Gangtok and accessed by mountain roads. The site overlooks forested slopes and nearby farmland typical of the Sikkim hills.
- Religious role: Serves as the principal seat in exile of the Karma Kagyu school of Tibetan Buddhism and is an active monastery with daily pujas and visiting periods for lay practitioners.
- Access: Located about 20-25 kilometres from Gangtok and reached by mountain roads; many visitors combine a trip here with tours of eastern Sikkim.
What to See #
- Dharmachakra Centre (main complex): The Dharmachakra Centre and main assembly hall form the modern temple complex built under the 16th Karmapa; it contains the principal shrine, assembly hall and monastic living quarters.
- Monastic shrines and living quarters: Smaller prayer rooms, stupas and residential buildings around the complex house monks and contain thangka paintings, ritual objects and the throne of the Karmapa tradition.
How to Get to Rumtek Monastery #
From Gangtok: Rumtek Monastery is reached by road (roughly 24 km northeast of Gangtok). The usual way is to hire a taxi or take a shared jeep from Gangtok’s taxi/jeep stand for the short drive (about 30-45 minutes depending on traffic); there is a small parking area close to the monastery and a short walk from the roadside up into the complex.
If you are coming from outside Sikkim, reach Gangtok first (by taxi or bus from Siliguri/New Jalpaiguri) and then take the local road to Rumtek - there are regular private-taxi and shared-jeep options rather than scheduled long-distance buses directly to the monastery.
Tips for Visiting Rumtek Monastery #
- Plan a morning visit: air is clearest and you have the best chance to observe monks' routines and the monastery's quiet before larger tourist groups arrive.
- Approach Rumtek from the main road out of Gangtok and use the monastery's principal entrance; staff at the gate can tell you about permitted areas and visiting hours.
- Respect rules about photography inside the shrine-ask before taking pictures-and take time to see the lesser-visited rooms and stupa area, where many of the monastery's ritual objects and thangkas are kept.
