Rumkale

Rumkale is a medieval fortress complex set on a steep limestone promontory overlooking the Euphrates River in southeastern Turkey, notable for its defensive position and surviving rock-cut features. The site contains defensive walls, cisterns and small chapels cut into the bedrock.

Within the ruins are rock-cut churches, carved chambers and masonry reflecting phases of Byzantine and Armenian occupation, and later Ottoman use. The fortress controlled a key river crossing and was intermittently occupied and modified by successive regional powers.

Its commanding position above the river made it strategically important across the medieval and early modern periods, and the surviving architecture reflects both military and religious functions. The site is reached by short boat trips from nearby riverside settlements and offers close views from the water.

Rumkale stands on the banks of the Euphrates in Şanlıurfa Province, near the district traditionally known as Halfeti, on a prominent rocky headland that projects into the river.
