Ruins of Quilmes

The Ruins of Quilmes are an archaeological site in Tucumán Province, Argentina, preserving the remains of a large pre-Columbian fortified settlement built and occupied by the Quilmes people. The site includes surviving walls, terraces and foundation outlines that mark a once-extensive hilltop citadel.

Excavation and presentation have revealed defensive stone and adobe structures, terraces cut into the hillside and pathways across the settlement; an on-site museum provides interpretation and displays of recovered artifacts. The site is widely cited as the largest pre-Hispanic archaeological complex in Argentina and is a major cultural and tourist destination in the region.

Historically, Quilmes was occupied by indigenous people before the Spanish conquest; in the 17th century survivors were forcibly relocated by colonial authorities, a decisive episode in the community’s decline and the abandonment of the site. The ruins lie in the Calchaquí valleys of northwest Argentina and are reached from nearby regional towns and Tucumán Province.
