Rua Augusta Arch

The Rua Augusta Arch is a monumental triumphal arch on Praça do Comércio in Lisbon, serving as the ceremonial gateway from the Baixa district onto the riverfront. The present arch dates from the 19th century and is decorated with allegorical sculptures and figures.

An internal lift and stair lead to a rooftop viewing platform that looks along Rua Augusta toward the city and out to the Tagus estuary. The arch is an architectural focal point for the reconstructed Baixa district and functions as both a sculptural monument and visitor viewpoint.

The arch was erected as part of Lisbon’s long rebuilding and embellishment of the Baixa area following the 1755 earthquake; its sculptural program celebrates national identity and civic renewal. Over time it has become a popular stopping point on city walking routes and a convenient place to view the riverfront.

The arch stands at the eastern edge of Praça do Comércio in central Lisbon, directly beside the river, and is a short walk from Rossio and the main downtown pedestrian streets. It is centrally located within Lisbon’s historic core and served by nearby public transport.
