The Royal Saltworks at Arc-et-Senans is an 18th-century industrial complex in eastern France designed by the architect Claude-Nicolas Ledoux as a model salt production facility and planned community. The site is noted for its semicircular layout and its combination of industrial, residential and administrative buildings.

Visitors encounter the curved ensemble of workshops and housing arranged around a central space, along with exhibition areas that explain 18th-century salt production technology and Ledoux’s architectural ideas. The saltworks is presented as both an industrial heritage site and an example of Enlightenment-era utopian planning.

Construction of the saltworks took place in the late 1770s as part of state-sponsored salt industry reforms and architectural commissions. The complex fell out of industrial use in the 19th century and was later conserved and interpreted as a heritage site.

Arc-et-Senans lies in eastern France in the Bourgogne-Franche-Comté area, roughly between Dijon and Besançon, set in a lowland landscape that supported the saltworks’ logistics and worker settlements.

• Workers’ lodgings and service buildings: Rows of workers’ dwellings and service buildings arranged according to the architect’s ideal of an ordered industrial community.

Arc-et-Senans is about 30 km south of Besançon. By car take the D475/D1079 from Besançon; there is parking at the site. Regional buses connect from Besançon (check local schedules). The site is signposted from the main regional roads.

• Buy tickets online in advance during high season (April-October) to avoid queues.
• Take the guided audio tour: the building's geometry and the names of the architects make more sense when someone explains the ringing circle of buildings.
• Notice the subtle differences in stone and mortar on the courtyard facades-repairs over two centuries have produced an almost time-lapse of masonry.
