Royal Opera of Versailles

The Royal Opera of Versailles, known as the Opéra Royal, is the historic court theatre situated inside the Palace of Versailles near Paris. It was built in the second half of the 18th century to serve royal ceremonial and theatrical functions.

The opera’s auditorium is notable for its ordered classical architecture and richly decorated interior; it seats approximately 700 people and retains much of its original 18th century design. Guided tours and ticketed performances allow visitors to see the restored stage machinery and courtly layout that served royal entertainments.

Commissioned as the palace’s theatre, the building was completed in the 18th century and was used by the royal household for official ceremonies and performances. It has undergone conservation and restoration to allow public access and contemporary staged productions while preserving historic fabric.

The opera is located within the Palace of Versailles estate, southwest of central Paris, inside the palace’s west wing and close to the palace gardens.
