Royal Natal National Park is a protected area in KwaZulu-Natal in eastern South Africa, located within the uKhahlamba-Drakensberg mountain range. It is best known for high mountain scenery dominated by steep cliffs and escarpments.

The park’s most famous landmark is the Drakensberg Amphitheatre, a long basalt cliff wall with dramatic vertical faces, and the nearby Tugela Falls, whose total descent is widely cited at about 948 metres. The area offers established hiking trails, rock climbing and multi-day routes that lead to ridge-top viewpoints and the foot of the falls.

The park was established to protect the unique Montane grassland and escarpment environment and to provide public access to the Drakensberg landscapes; it contains archaeological rock art sites created by San hunter-gatherers. Management has focused on conservation of biodiversity and cultural heritage alongside visitor access.

Royal Natal sits in northern KwaZulu-Natal near the town of Bergville, on the eastern escarpment of the Drakensberg range, several hours’ drive inland from the coast of KwaZulu-Natal.

  • Activities: The park is part of the Drakensberg mountain range and is a prime location for multi-day hikes, scrambling and highland scenery.

Tips for Visiting Royal Natal National Park #

  • Visit early in the morning on weekdays for the clearest views of the Amphitheatre and Tugela Falls and to avoid minibuses and tour-group crowds that arrive later in the day.
  • Ask at the park office about trail conditions and the Gorge/Tugela trails - the short Gorge walk from the main day-use area gives a dramatically different perspective of the Amphitheatre that many visitors skip.
  • Plan visits after summer rain periods (Southern Hemisphere summer: roughly Nov-Mar) if you want the best chance of seeing Tugela Falls at full flow, and allow extra time because mountain weather can change quickly.
