Royal Monastery of San Juan de la Peña

The Royal Monastery of San Juan de la Peña is a historic monastic complex in Aragon, northern Spain, notable for its location beneath a massive rock overhang and its role in medieval Aragonese history. It was an important religious and royal burial site during the medieval kingdom of Aragon.

The ensemble comprises the older cliff-built monastery with Romanesque features and a later monastery complex constructed after damage to the first buildings. Visitors come to see the medieval cloisters, the royal pantheon and the stone-carved façades and chapels.

The monastery was founded in the early medieval period and became closely associated with the kings of Aragon; it later suffered damage and was supplemented by new construction in subsequent centuries, leading to the two-part complex visible today. Over time the site moved from a living monastic community to a historic monument and museum site.

San Juan de la Peña is located in the foothills of the central Pyrenees in Aragon, near the town of Jaca in the province of Huesca. It sits under a distinctive rocky escarpment and is reached by local mountain roads from the surrounding valleys.

• Old Monastery: The older monastic complex is built into the rock face beneath a large overhanging cliff and contains medieval Romanesque architecture, cloisters and a royal pantheon used for burials of early Aragonese rulers.
• New Monastery: A later monastic complex built at lower level after the older buildings were partly damaged; this 'new' monastery dates from post-medieval reconstruction and contains Baroque and later-period elements.
