Royal Hospital Chelsea

The Royal Hospital Chelsea is a historic retirement and nursing home for British Army veterans, founded by King Charles II in the late 17th century. The complex was designed in part by Sir Christopher Wren and remains an active residence for Chelsea Pensioners.

Visitors see the formal Wren-era quadrangle and the hospital chapel, meet Chelsea Pensioners in their distinctive scarlet coats, and learn about the site’s military and social history through guided tours and the visitor centre. The grounds form a large, well-maintained urban green used for commemorations and public events.

The site is also famous as the location for the annual RHS Chelsea Flower Show, which occupies the hospital grounds each May and attracts international attendees and exhibitors. Tours and public programmes are scheduled seasonally, and visitors are asked to respect residents’ privacy.

Commissioned by Charles II and constructed from the 1680s with designs by Sir Christopher Wren and colleagues, the Royal Hospital was established to provide a permanent home for retired soldiers.
