The gardens present extensive living plant collections, themed garden beds and conservatory displays, with formal lawns facing Sydney Harbour and panoramic views of the Sydney Opera House. Dedicated displays cover native Australian flora, palms, succulents and seasonal floral exhibitions.

Founded in 1816, the gardens developed through the 19th and 20th centuries as both a scientific institution and public green space, with successive periods of planting, landscaping and the addition of built conservatory and exhibition facilities.

Sited on the eastern edge of Sydney’s central business district at Circular Quay, the gardens sit between the harbour foreshore and the Royal Government Domain, immediately adjacent to the Sydney Opera House.

  • Founding and size: Established in 1816, the gardens cover roughly 30 hectares and lie immediately adjacent to the Sydney Opera House, offering direct harbour views.
  • Major attraction: The Calyx is the gardens' modern exhibition and events space, replacing an earlier glasshouse and hosting seasonal plant displays.
