The Royal Botanic Garden Edinburgh (RBGE) is a scientific botanical institution and public garden in Edinburgh, Scotland, founded in 1670. It is an internationally recognised centre for plant science, conservation and public display.
The main Inverleith site contains living collections across formal beds, rock gardens and glasshouses and holds specialist collections including tropical and arid plants. The gardens support research and conservation programmes and maintain an extensive herbarium and reference library for botanical study.
RBGE’s collections and displays are arranged to support both public education and scientific work, with seasonal displays, themed beds and a suite of glasshouses that present plants from different climates. The institution also manages satellite sites in other parts of Scotland as part of its national remit.
Located north of Edinburgh’s city centre in the Inverleith district, the gardens are a short distance from the New Town and are accessible by public transport and on foot from central Edinburgh.
- Size: The main Inverleith site covers roughly 28 hectares (about 70 acres), making it large enough for extensive living collections and specialist gardens.
- When to visit: Best times to visit are spring and summer when bulbs, herbaceous borders and the glasshouse displays are at peak colour and activity.
