Royal Abbey of Saint Wandrille (Abbaye de Saint-Wandrille, historically known as Fontenelle) is a Benedictine monastery in Normandy in northwestern France. The community traces its foundation to the 7th century, when Wandregisel (Saint Wandrille) established the monastic site.
The complex includes an abbey church and surviving monastic buildings displaying Romanesque and later architectural phases; visitors can see the church, cloister areas and elements from medieval rebuilding campaigns. The site is still occupied by a Benedictine community and combines active monastic life with historic fabric accessible to visitors at set times.
The abbey was founded in about 649 and grew into an important medieval monastic house with a rich manuscript and liturgical tradition. It was suppressed during the French Revolution and later restored and reoccupied in the 19th century, with subsequent repairs and conservation work to the surviving structures.
The abbey stands in the commune of Saint-Wandrille-Rançon in Normandy, on the banks of the Seine’s estuarine area west of Rouen.
