Rothesay Castle

Rothesay Castle is a medieval fortress located on the harbour front of Rothesay on the Isle of Bute, Scotland, and is a prominent historic landmark of the island. The structure dates largely from the 13th century and served as a principal stronghold of the local stewards.

The castle is notable for its near-circular curtain wall with multiple rounded towers forming a shell-keep arrangement, a comparatively rare plan in Britain. The compact site is easy to explore on foot and provides close-up views of medieval masonry and the harbour setting.

Built in the medieval period by the ruling Stewarts of Bute, the castle remained an important defensive and administrative centre through later centuries, undergoing repairs and alterations over time. Preservation work has stabilised the curtain wall and towers for public access.

Rothesay Castle sits directly beside Rothesay’s harbour on the east coast of the Isle of Bute in the Firth of Clyde, accessible by ferry from the Scottish mainland and forming part of the town’s historic waterfront.
