Rossio
Square Historic Lisbon square and major transport hub
Lisbon’s Rossio (Praça Dom Pedro IV) sits in Baixa, flanked by cafés, theatres and tiled façades; visitors use it as a meeting point before trams, shops and nearby sights.
Rossio is the popular name for Praça Dom Pedro IV, a principal public square in the historic center of Lisbon, Portugal. It has been an important civic and commercial gathering place for several centuries.
The square is framed by 18th- and 19th-century buildings and is a focal point for cafes, shops, and street life; it is a common meeting point for both locals and tourists. Architectural highlights immediately adjoining the plaza include the Teatro Nacional D. Maria II and the ornate façade of Rossio Railway Station.
Rossio has been a center of public life in Lisbon since the medieval period, hosting markets, executions, celebrations, and political events. The square’s current urban form and many surrounding buildings date from rebuilding efforts after the 1755 earthquake and later 19th-century development.
Situated in Lisbon’s Baixa and Chiado districts, Rossio lies a short walk from the Tagus River and is a central node for city trams and trains, including direct connections to other parts of the capital.
- Central monument: Centered on Praça Dom Pedro IV, the square features an 18th-century column topped by a statue of King Dom Pedro IV at its center.
- Transport and amenities: Lined with cafes, shops, and tram stops, the square functions as a major pedestrian hub in central Lisbon and connects to Rossio Station for rail services across the city.
What to See #
- Rossio Railway Station: The 19th-century railway station on the south side of the square, notable for its richly decorated Neo-Manueline façade and arched entrance facing the square.
- Teatro Nacional D. Maria II: The 19th-century national theatre that occupies the north side of the square, known as Teatro Nacional D. Maria II, with a classical portico facing the plaza.
