Ross Lake National Recreation Area
Park Wilderness recreation area with reservoirs and mountain scenery
Ross Lake National Recreation Area in Washington offers backcountry boating on Ross Lake, mountain-side campsites and alpine hiking inside the North Cascades-popular for paddling, multiday backpacking and views of glaciated peaks.
Ross Lake National Recreation Area in northern Washington protects a mountainous corridor of the Skagit River and the long reservoir known as Ross Lake. The area is managed for outdoor recreation, water-based access and backcountry use adjacent to North Cascades National Park.
The recreation area is best known for Ross Lake itself, which provides paddling, boating and boat-in campsites along a remote water corridor. Trailheads from the lake and surrounding forest offer hiking, fishing and multi-day backcountry routes that connect into the adjacent North Cascades wilderness.
The landscape was shaped in part by the construction of hydroelectric projects on the Skagit River in the 20th century; federal recreation designation followed to provide managed public access to the reservoir and surrounding lands. Management focuses on balancing water operations with outdoor recreation and wilderness preservation.
Ross Lake NRA sits in the North Cascades of northern Washington State, stretching along the Skagit River corridor toward the Canadian border and adjoining North Cascades National Park. The area is remote, with small gateway communities and trailhead access from mountain roads rather than large nearby cities.
- Boat-in camping and permits: Boat-in camping and water access are primary recreation modes, and backcountry permits are required for overnight stays; many users access the area by launching on Ross Lake or hiking in from adjacent trailheads.
What to See #
- Ross Lake reservoir: Ross Lake, a long reservoir on the Skagit River created by Ross Dam, provides boat-in campsites and water access corridors used for paddling and trailheads into the surrounding backcountry.
- Trailheads and access corridors: A ring of trailheads, shorelines and service roads that connect the recreation area to the adjoining North Cascades National Park and national forest lands for hiking, fishing and backcountry use.
Tips for Visiting Ross Lake National Recreation Area #
- Plan your visit between late spring and early fall; State Route 20 (North Cascades Highway) is closed in winter and access from the Diablo/Marblemount side is seasonal.
- Many shoreline areas and campsites are boat-access-only-if you want to reach remote coves or backcountry sites, arrange the Ross Lake Resort boat shuttle or bring your own watercraft in advance.
- Expect long drives between trailheads and very limited cell service-download maps and topographic info beforehand and allow plenty of time for slow, winding mountain roads.
- Avoid peak weekend crowds by starting hikes very early or choosing midweek; popular trailheads near Diablo and Newhalem fill early in summer.
