Rosenborg Castle
Palace Copenhagen castle displaying Danish crown jewels and history
A 17th-century Copenhagen castle built by Christian IV, housing crown jewels and royal collections within its preserved rooms. Visitors tour royal apartments and walk the adjoining King’s Garden.
Rosenborg Castle is a early 17th-century royal castle in central Copenhagen built as a royal residence and pleasure palace by King Christian IV. Construction began in 1606 and the building was completed in the 1620s, making it a well-preserved example of Dutch Renaissance architecture in Denmark.
The castle houses the Royal Collections across a series of state rooms and museum displays, including a large historic hall with tapestries and coronation thrones. The Treasury contains the Danish Crown Regalia and other ceremonial objects; many rooms retain original furnishings and decorative programmes from the 17th and 18th centuries.
Rosenborg was built by Christian IV as part of his extensive building programme and used as a royal residence until the 18th century before becoming a museum open to the public. Over time the castle has been adapted to display the royal collections and to conserve historic interiors for visitors.
The castle stands within Kongens Have in central Copenhagen, a short walk from Nørreport Station and Copenhagen’s main shopping streets. It is within the historic core of the city and easily reached on foot from other central landmarks.
- Crown Jewels: The Treasury displays the Crown Jewels and royal regalia; security restrictions and queuing are common during high season.
- Best viewing point: Combine a visit with a walk through Kongens Have for the best views of the castle exterior and surrounding Renaissance garden.
What to See #
- Interior highlights: Contains the Royal Collections with historic state rooms, the Knight's Hall with coronation thrones and tapestries, and the Treasury where the Danish Crown Regalia are exhibited.
- King's Garden (Kongens Have): The castle sits inside Kongens Have, Copenhagen's oldest royal garden created in the early 17th century and laid out around Rosenborg as a formal park.
How to Get to Rosenborg Castle #
Rosenborg Castle sits within the King’s Garden (Kongens Have) just north of central Copenhagen. Take Copenhagen Metro lines M1 or M2 to Nørreport station and walk 5-10 minutes south into the garden to reach Rosenborg; from København H (Central Station) it is about a 15-minute walk (≈1-1.5 km).
The castle is in the city centre and readily reachable on foot, by bike, or short taxi ride from central Copenhagen roads (e.g., H.C. Andersens Boulevard).
Tips for Visiting Rosenborg Castle #
- Visit Rosenborg as soon as it opens or mid‑afternoon to avoid guided-tour bunching; the treasury rooms displaying the Danish Crown Regalia are a highlight and can get crowded.
- Enter via Øster Voldgade and walk through Kongens Have (King's Garden) beforehand to enjoy the park and approach the castle before visitor peaks.
- Allow time for the upper floors - the royal apartments and tapestries are detailed and frequently rushed by visitors focusing only on the regalia.
Best Time to Visit Rosenborg Castle #
Best in late spring and summer for the gardens and longer daylight, with shoulder seasons offering a quieter visit.
