Roman walls of Lugo
Monument Roman defensive walls encircling Lugo, UNESCO World Heritage
Lugo’s Roman walls encircle the old town and form one of the best-preserved stretches of Roman military architecture. Visitors walk the elevated promenade atop the walls and visit the adjacent cathedral.
The Roman walls of Lugo are a largely complete circuit of Roman defensive walls that enclose the historic centre of Lugo in Galicia, northwestern Spain; they date to the Roman imperial period, constructed in the late 3rd century AD. The walls form a continuous fortified enclosure and are one of the best-preserved examples of Roman city walls.
The circuit is roughly 2 kilometres in length and retains a raised walkway along much of its top, with multiple towers and gates punctuating the wall line; the ramparts are of substantial thickness and stand to a significant height above the old town. Walkways along the ramparts offer an uninterrupted view around the historic centre and into the surrounding urban fabric.
Built by Roman military engineers as the defensive circuit for the municipium of Lucus Augusti, the walls remained in use through late antiquity and the medieval period and were maintained and adapted over many centuries. Conservation and restorations in modern times have focused on preserving the complete circuit and the accessible rampart walk.
The walls encircle Lugo’s casco histórico in the province of Lugo, Galicia; they sit within the urban grid of the modern city and are a dominant feature of the city centre.
- World Heritage: Inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List in 2000.
