O Eume Monument

O Eume refers to the valley of the Eume River and the adjacent protected woodlands in Galicia, Spain, often visited for its natural forest and cultural heritage. The site includes a riverside monastery and a stretch of riparian Atlantic forest noted for biodiversity.

Trails follow the river and connect small hamlets with viewpoints and historic sites, the most prominent being the former Benedictine monastery located above the river. Walks typically range from short riverside routes to longer hikes through forested slopes.

The Eume valley and its monastery sit in Galicia in north-west Spain, in the province of A Coruña, within a steep, wooded river valley drained by the Eume River.

• Best viewpoints: The area is a protected natural park of Atlantic oak forest-good viewpoints are located along the river and at the monastery for valley panoramas.

• Monastery of Caaveiro: A medieval monastery complex set on a wooded riverside promontory, accessible by footpaths and offering viewpoints over the Eume valley.

From Pontedeume or Pontesampaio, follow local roads into the Fragas do Eume Natural Park. The monastery is reached by a short but steep path; parking and signposts are provided at the visitor area.

• The monastery of San Xoán de Caaveiro (O Eume valley) has a steep access path-wear good shoes and allow time for the walk downhill and back uphill.
• Visit early in the morning to catch light pouring into the monastery courtyards and to avoid coach-trip crowds on weekends.
