Roman theatre, Verona

The Roman theatre of Verona is an ancient performing-arts structure on the Adige riverbank in Verona, northern Italy, originating in the Roman period. It is a principal Roman archaeological site within the city.

The theatre’s semicircular cavea and stage remains are visible, set into the riverbank slope, and are appreciated for their urban setting and classical engineering. Adjacent to the ruins, the Archaeological Museum of Verona exhibits artefacts recovered from the theatre and the city’s Roman past.

Constructed in the Roman period, the theatre served public performances and civic functions and later fell into partial ruin as the city evolved. Excavations and conservation since the 19th and 20th centuries have exposed the theatre’s layout and preserved surviving masonry.

The site sits within Verona’s historic centre on the right bank of the Adige river, a short walk from other Roman and medieval monuments in the city.
