Roman Theatre at Palmyra

The Roman Theatre at Palmyra is an ancient performance structure from the Roman imperial period located within the archaeological remains of Palmyra in central Syria. It was an integral element of the city’s monumental core adjacent to colonnaded streets and other public buildings.

Architectural elements include stone seating and a defined stage area that were used for public spectacles and civic events. The theatre formed part of Palmyra’s urban plan and commercial and ceremonial life in antiquity.

The theatre dates to the 2nd century AD, built during Palmyra’s development under Roman rule. In the 21st century the wider site suffered damage during the Syrian conflict; conservation and assessment efforts have taken place since the cessation of major hostilities.

Palmyra is located in an oasis in Homs Governorate in central Syria, some distance northeast of the city of Homs, and has long been a key archaeological and historical site in the Syrian desert.
