Roman Monuments, Cathedral of St Peter and Church of Our Lady in Trier

The site is a serial ensemble of Roman monuments together with the Cathedral of St Peter and the Church of Our Lady located in the city of Trier in Rhineland-Palatinate, western Germany. It represents some of the most extensive surviving Roman urban remains north of the Alps and includes major civic and religious buildings.

The ensemble presents large-scale Roman urban architecture - an imposing city gate, a basilica, baths and an amphitheatre - alongside medieval ecclesiastical structures. Many principal monuments are within the compact historic core and can be reached on foot; the Roman complexes occupy both the city centre and nearby slopes.

The monuments were constructed by the Romans between the 1st and 4th centuries AD when Trier was an important Roman administrative centre. During the medieval period several Roman structures were reused or incorporated into Christian buildings and the Cathedral of St Peter developed on earlier Roman and early medieval foundations.

The property sits within the city of Trier on the Moselle River in western Germany, close to the border with Luxembourg and not far from France. The monuments are distributed through Trier’s historic centre and adjacent areas where Roman urban development was concentrated.
