The Roman circus of Mérida is a large Roman-era chariot-racing arena located in the Roman city of Emerita Augusta (modern Mérida). It was built in the Roman period to host chariot races and public spectacles and forms part of Mérida’s extensive archaeological complex.
Key surviving elements include the long race track, the central spine or spina, and substantial remains of the spectator terraces (cavea); the track measures roughly 400 metres long. Over time the site fell into disuse, became buried, and has been excavated and partially conserved as part of the city’s archaeological park.
The circus sits close to Mérida’s Roman theatre and amphitheatre within the historic core of the Roman city, forming one of several major monuments that together illustrate Roman urban planning and entertainment infrastructure.
