Rohtas Fort

Rohtas Fort is a large 16th-century fortress in Punjab, Pakistan, constructed by Sher Shah Suri between 1541 and 1548 as a military stronghold and administrative centre to control strategic routes.

The fort features massive sloping stone ramparts, numerous bastions and a system of gates that combine practical defence with architectural detail. Built to dominate the surrounding landscape and secure approaches, the complex includes fortified gateways and inner defensive works.

Rohtas served successive regional powers after its construction and remains one of the major examples of early modern fortification in South Asia, noted for its scale and preservation of walls and gates.

The fort lies in northern Punjab near the village of Rohtas and the town of Dina, in the general vicinity of the Jhelum district, occupying a strategic position above the surrounding plains.
