The Rock-hewn Churches of Ivanovo are a group of monastic complexes carved into river cliffs near the village of Ivanovo in northeastern Bulgaria. The site is noted for its network of caves, churches and monastic cells, many decorated with medieval frescoes.

Visitors encounter narrow cliffside passages, painted church interiors and small hermitages carved into the rock, with frescos that mostly date from the 13th and 14th centuries. The ensemble illustrates medieval monastic practice and Byzantine-influenced ecclesiastical art in the region.

The complex developed from hermit settlements in the medieval period and flourished under the Second Bulgarian Empire as a religious and cultural centre. Over time some buildings fell into ruin while others were preserved; archaeological and conservation work has helped document the frescoes and architectural forms.

The site lies on the Rusenski Lom river valley near the town of Ruse in northeastern Bulgaria, set in a landscape of limestone cliffs and riverine woodland.

From the village it’s a short walk to the archaeological site.
