Rock Art of Alta
Historical Site Prehistoric petroglyphs carved along Arctic Norwegian fjords
The Alta rock carvings in Finnmark feature thousands of Bronze and Stone Age petroglyphs depicting boats, animals and hunters along fjord shores. Visitors use boardwalks, a museum and guided walks to study prehistoric coastal life.
The Rock Art of Alta is a group of prehistoric petroglyph sites near the town of Alta in northern Norway, containing thousands of carved images created by prehistoric coastal communities and inscribed on the UNESCO list in 1985.
Panels include scenes of hunting, fishing, boats, humans and animals carved into rock surfaces along the fjord and valley slopes. One of the principal concentrations is at Hjemmeluft, where a protected walkway and small visitor centre make the carvings accessible.
The carvings were produced over several millennia by peoples exploiting coastal and inland resources, reflecting social and ritual practices. They were first recorded by archaeologists in the late 19th and early 20th centuries and have since been conserved and interpreted for public access.
The panels are distributed along the Altafjord and tributary valleys in Finnmark, immediately adjacent to the town of Alta on Norway’s northern coast.
- Scale and chronology: The rock carvings number in the thousands and were created over a long period by hunter-gatherer and early farming communities; panels span coastal and riverine locations.
- Visitor facilities and timing: A visitor centre and boardwalk at the main site provide protection for the panels and year-round access; summer offers long daylight for extended visits.
What to See #
- Hjemmeluft: Hjemmeluft, the largest concentration of carved panels near Alta, with accessible boardwalks and on-site interpretation at a small visitor centre.
- Other carving sites: Several rock-carving concentrations along the Altafjord and adjacent valley slopes, where panels are carved on horizontal bedrock and sheltered surfaces.
How to Get to Rock Art of Alta #
Fly to Alta Airport (ALF) - there are regular domestic connections from Oslo and Tromsø - then take a taxi or rent a car for the short drive into Alta. The Alta Museum and the main rock‑carving viewing areas are reached via the main road out of town (E6); the drive from Alta town centre to the museum/rock carvings is only about 10-15 minutes and there is a short walk from the museum parking/visitor centre to the carved panels.
Tips for Visiting Rock Art of Alta #
- Head to the Alta Museum visitor centre first - it is the main access point for the best-preserved panels (Hjemmeluft area) and has exhibits that explain the panels before you walk the outdoor trails.
- Visit in early morning or late evening in summer to avoid the small peak of daytime visitors and to see panels in softer light; many people only visit midday during tour arrivals.
- Follow the boardwalks and marked trails rather than trying to approach carvings directly - the site is distributed across several protected localities along the Altafjord and the museum staff can point you to less-visited panels.
Best Time to Visit Rock Art of Alta #
Go in summer (June-August) for the mildest conditions, long daylight and the easiest access to rock panels.
