Rochester Castle

Rochester Castle is a medieval stone castle in Rochester, Kent, dominated by a large Norman keep built in the early 12th century. It occupies a strategic riverside site above the River Medway and is one of the most complete surviving Norman keeps in England.

Construction of the principal stone keep dates to the early 1100s, attributed to the era of Bishop Gundulf and Norman ecclesiastical and military building in England; the site was repeatedly used and modified through the Middle Ages and saw notable sieges, including actions in the early 13th century. Subsequent centuries brought repairs and partial ruin before later conservation work.
