Risiera di San Sabba

Risiera di San Sabba is a World War II-era site in Trieste that was converted from an industrial rice-husking factory into a Nazi detention and transit camp and is preserved today as a memorial and museum.

Visitors encounter the preserved industrial complex with former detention cells, the site of the wartime crematorium, and museum exhibits documenting wartime arrests, deportations, and killings. Interpretive panels, personal testimony, and documentary material outline the camp’s role in the occupation of northeastern Italy.

Originally an industrial rice-processing facility, the complex was requisitioned and operated by German security services from 1943 to 1945 for detention, interrogation, and deportation of civilians and partisans; the site included a crematorium used during the occupation. After the war the factory complex was preserved and later converted into a museum and national memorial to the victims.

The site is located in the San Sabba district of Trieste in northeastern Italy, within the urban area of Trieste and close to the city’s port and railway connections.
