How to Get to Rio Doce State Park #

The park is reached by car from Belo Horizonte (roughly 3-4 hours) via BR-381 and BR-262 toward Governador Valadares, then follow state roads to the towns of Marliéria or Dionísio for park entrances. Local buses serve the larger towns nearby; from there a taxi or arranged transfer is recommended because entrance gates and trailheads are spread out.

Tips for Visiting Rio Doce State Park #

  • Arrive early to hike the forest trails before mid-day heat; the park is large and trailheads are spread out
  • Bring binoculars for birds-over 300 species have been recorded in the region
  • If driving from Belo Horizonte, use BR-262 then follow signs to Marliéria/Conselheiro Pena; cell reception can be patchy inside the reserve
