Riñihue Lake
Lake Andean lake in Los Ríos Region, volcanic origins
One of Chile’s Los Ríos lakes, Riñihue Lake offers forested shores, freshwater fishing and boat access to the Andean foothills; visitors use it as a base for boating, trout angling and woodland trails.
Riñihue Lake is a freshwater lake in Chile’s Los Ríos Region, located in the southern Andean foothills. It is part of a chain of lakes and rivers in the region and is set within a landscape of forested mountains and river valleys.
The lake has been used for local fishing and small‑boat recreation and is also notable for its hydrological significance to downstream waterways. In 1960 major earthquakes and associated landslides created temporary natural dams at the lake’s outlet, prompting large‑scale engineering and emergency efforts to manage water levels and reduce flood risk downstream.
Geographically the lake lies inland from the Pacific coast in Chile’s lake district, within the mountainous terrain of Los Ríos Region; the nearest regional centre is Valdivia and the area is accessed via regional roads connecting lakeside communities.
- 1960 outburst events: The lake was the focus of emergency engineering and flood‑control measures following major earthquakes and landslides in 1960, when blockage of the outflow threatened downstream settlements.
