Chilean Lake District
Region Scenic lake region with volcanoes and forests
A region of southern Chile defined by lakes, volcanoes and national parks; visitors come for hiking, kayaking, fishing, skiing on volcanic slopes and access to protected forests and hot springs.
The Chilean Lake District is a lake-and-volcano region in southern Chile known for its concentration of large lakes, active volcanoes and national parks. It is centred on towns such as Puerto Varas and Pucón and includes multiple major lakes and peak volcanoes.
The area contains more than a dozen significant lakes and several prominent volcanoes. Lake Llanquihue is one of the largest by surface area (about 860 km²). Prominent volcanoes include Osorno at about 2,652 metres and Villarrica at about 2,847 metres, both visible from lakeside towns and used year-round for outdoor recreation.
Indigenous Mapuche and Huilliche peoples long inhabited the region. From the mid-19th century there was substantial German and European immigration which shaped settlement patterns and architecture in towns like Puerto Varas; protected areas and parks were later established to preserve landscapes and support tourism.
Geographically the district sits in southern Chile across parts of the Los Lagos, Los Ríos and Araucanía administrative areas, along the western foothills of the Andes. Puerto Montt serves as a regional transport hub and the landscape alternates between lakeshores, volcano slopes and temperate rainforest.
- Best viewpoints: The best panoramic views of Volcán Osorno are from Puerto Varas and the Petrohué Falls area on the western shore of Lake Llanquihue.
- Best seasons: Summer (December to February) offers the warmest weather for hiking and lake activities, while winter (June to August) provides skiing on higher slopes and snow-covered volcanoes.
What to See #
- Lake Llanquihue: One of Chile's largest lakes by surface area at about 860 square kilometres, edged by the town of Puerto Varas and offering views of Volcán Osorno.

- Osorno Volcano: A symmetrical stratovolcano rising to 2,652 metres, often photographed from the shores of Lake Llanquihue and from the Petrohué Falls area.
- Vicente Pérez Rosales National Park: One of the region's main protected areas containing the Petrohué Falls and sections of Lake Todos los Santos, used for hiking and river excursions.
- Puyehue / Antillanca area: A spa and mountain recreation area with hot springs and ski terrain serving winter sports and year-round hiking.
