Rigi
Mountains Mountain overlooking Lake Lucerne with panoramic alpine views
Between lakes Lucerne and Zug, Rigi offers accessible alpine trails, the historic Rigi Railway cogwheel line, and panoramic views of the Swiss Plateau and Alps - popular for day hikes, mountain rail excursions, and seasonal skiing near the Canton of Schwyz.
Rigi is a prominent Swiss mountain massif in the Cantons of Schwyz and Lucerne, dominated by the summit Rigi Kulm at 1,798 meters. It is a long-established tourist destination known for easy summit access and broad panoramic views.
From the summit and several lower viewpoints there are wide views over Lake Lucerne, Lake Zug and many central Swiss Alps; the summit area and ridge are crossed by numerous marked hiking trails and winter routes. The mountain is served by historic rack railways and cable cars, making it accessible to non-technical visitors.
The modern mountain tourism infrastructure grew in the 19th century with the construction of the Vitznau-Rigi rack railway in 1871 and subsequent lines and hotels. The massif has been used for recreation, health resorts and alpine tourism since that period.
Rigi sits above the shores of Lake Lucerne in central Switzerland, forming a distinctive, largely forested massif between the cantons of Schwyz and Lucerne. It is readily reached from Lucerne and surrounding towns by rail and road.
- Elevation: Summit elevation is 1,798 meters, offering one of the most accessible panoramic summit views in central Switzerland.
- Historic railway: The Vitznau-Rigi railway opened in 1871 using the Riggenbach rack system; it remains a popular route to the summit.
What to See #
- Rigi Kulm: Summit ridge and **Rigi Kulm** station occupy the highest point at 1,798 meters, with a summit hotel and panoramic viewpoints over Lake Lucerne and surrounding alpine ranges.
- Rigi Kaltbad: **Rigi Kaltbad** is a spa and resort settlement with a cable car link from Weggis and walking trails that connect to the summit area; it is a common base for hikes and winter sports.
- Rigi railways: The historic rack railways - the Vitznau-Rigi and Arth-Rigi lines - provide rail access to different sides of the massif; the Vitznau-Rigi line opened in 1871 and was the first mountain railway in Switzerland.
How to Get to Rigi #
From Lucerne Hauptbahnhof you can take a Lake Lucerne passenger boat to Vitznau (about 30-40 minutes) and then ride the historic Vitznau-Rigi rack railway up to Rigi Kulm. Alternatively take an SBB train from Lucerne to Arth‑Goldau and change there to the Arth-Rigi rack railway (the Arth-Rigi terminus is directly at the Arth‑Goldau station). Walking from the boat landing or the train platforms to the rack‑railway stations is typically only a few minutes.
Tips for Visiting Rigi #
- Take the cogwheel railway from Vitznau for the classic Lake Lucerne ascent and sunrise trips to Rigi Kulm; the Vitznau route gives the most dramatic lakeside perspective as you climb.
- Arrive for sunrise or late afternoon to beat day‑trip crowds from Lucerne - the summit is busiest midmorning but much quieter for first light and for alpine glow before sunset.
- If you want fewer people, approach from the Arth‑Goldau side (rail connections from Zug/Zurich) - that side has shorter day‑trip traffic and good walking options from the station to the summit.
Best Time to Visit Rigi #
Summer (June-August) is best for clear views and hiking; winter is good for snow scenery and winter sports.
