Richtersveld Cultural and Botanical Landscape

The Richtersveld Cultural and Botanical Landscape is a rugged, arid mountain and riverine area in South Africa’s Northern Cape that combines exceptional succulent biodiversity with a living cultural landscape shaped by Nama pastoralists. The property is recognised for both its botanical richness and its continuation of traditional seasonal grazing and plant use.

The terrain includes steep rocky ridges, valleys and the lower Orange River corridor, with vegetation adapted to extreme aridity and temperature ranges. Indigenous Nama communities maintain seasonal movement and land-use practices that have produced a distinctive cultural landscape of camps, paths and managed grazing areas.

Traditional land tenure and pastoral systems have shaped patterns of use over generations; conservation efforts seek to maintain both the biodiversity values and the cultural practices that sustain the landscape.

The Richtersveld lies in the far northwest of South Africa’s Northern Cape province, bordering Namibia to the north and centred around the Richtersveld Mountains and the lower reaches of the Orange River.
