Rhuddlan Castle
Castle Medieval river-facing Welsh castle built by Edward I
A 13th‑century Edward I fortress on the River Clwyd, Rhuddlan Castle attracts visitors for its stone walls, earthworks and riverside setting, with local guides explaining its role in medieval Wales.
Rhuddlan Castle is a late 13th‑century fortress in the town of Rhuddlan in north Wales, constructed during the English crown’s consolidation of the region. The stone castle was part of the chain of fortifications established by Edward I in Wales.
The site retains substantial sections of curtain wall, towers and earthworks that illustrate medieval concentric castle design and riverine defence. Visitors can inspect the masonry remains, the motte and the outline of the castle’s internal arrangement from public walkways.
The castle was built under the direction of the English crown in the late 1200s as part of military and administrative control of the surrounding territory; it acted as a garrison and local stronghold and later fell into partial ruin. Over centuries the site became a historic ruin managed as a scheduled monument.
Rhuddlan Castle stands on the east bank of the River Clwyd in Denbighshire, Wales, within the small town of Rhuddlan. It is a short drive from larger centers such as Rhyl and approximately 20-30 kilometers from regional transport hubs on the North Wales coast.
- Best viewpoints: Clear views of the castle's curtain walls and gatehouse are best obtained from the town side of the River Clwyd; the motte and surrounding earthworks remain visible.

- Check Cadw's website for current opening times and any access notes before you go, as Rhuddlan Castle is a compact historic ruin and facilities/closures change seasonally.

- Spend a few minutes walking the outer earthworks and the riverbank - the surviving defensive ditches and views over the River Clwyd give better context to the castle than viewing the ruined keep alone.
