Reynisfjara
Beach Black-sand beach with basalt columns and sea stacks
The black‑sand beach near Vík where Reynisfjara draws photographers for its basalt columns and the Reynisdrangar sea stacks; visitors must respect local warnings about powerful sneaker waves.
Reynisfjara is a black sand beach on Iceland’s south coast, noted for its volcanic black sand and striking basalt formations. It is one of Iceland’s most photographed coastal sites because of its dramatic geology and sea stacks.
The shoreline features the offshore sea stacks called Reynisdrangar and a cliff of columnar basalt that forms a prominent textured face and a sea cave. Visitors commonly view the basalt columns up close and photograph the stacks from the beach and nearby vantage points.
The coastline was formed by volcanic eruptions and subsequent coastal erosion that exposed polygonal basalt columns and created the black sand from eroded lava. Ongoing wave action continues to shape the cliffs and stacks.
The beach lies on the southern coast of Iceland near the village of Vík, about 10 kilometres west of Vík í Mýrdal and well within the Southern Region. It is reachable by the ring road and local access roads.
- Dangerous waves: Powerful sneaker waves and strong currents make swimming extremely dangerous; keep well back from the waterline and heed local warnings.
- Best times and safety: Accessible year-round but weather and sea conditions can change rapidly; sunrise and late-afternoon light are popular for photography.
What to See #
- Reynisdrangar sea stacks: Sea stacks rising from the surf just offshore, known collectively as Reynisdrangar, are a distinctive coastal feature visible from the beach.
- Basalt columns and sea cave (Hálsanefshellir): The cliff face beside the beach shows columnar basalt formations and a sea cave often visited by walkers for close-up views of the polygonal columns.
