Reventador
Volcano Highly active Ecuadorian volcano with frequent eruptions
An active volcano in Napo Province, Reventador regularly emits ash and lava flows visible from nearby highland roads. Adventurous visitors join guided treks and observe cloud-forest ecosystems on the volcano’s flanks.
El Reventador is an active stratovolcano in Napo Province in eastern Ecuador, and is one of the country’s most active volcanic centers. It sits in the eastern Andean foothills and produces frequent explosive activity and lava-dome growth.
The volcano is notable for persistent eruption plumes and pyroclastic activity visible from nearby high ground; viewers often observe ash columns that can reach several kilometers above the summit. Access into the immediate caldera area is limited because of ongoing activity and rugged terrain, so observation is generally from surrounding ridges or by air.
The edifice has been built and reshaped by repeated eruptions over the Holocene; in historical times it has produced frequent explosive episodes and dome formation that remodel the summit area. Scientific monitoring is active due to the volcano’s regular eruptive behavior.
Geographically it lies in the eastern cordillera of the Ecuadorian Andes within Napo Province, in a remote, forested region of the Amazon watershed. The nearest large urban center is Quito to the west, with access typically requiring long overland travel or air support.
Tips for Visiting Reventador #
- Reventador is an actively erupting volcano in Napo province - always arrange visits through an experienced local guide or lodge operator who monitors current activity and safe viewpoints.
- For the best visibility, aim for early morning observation windows when cloud cover over the Amazon slopes is often lower; visibility can deteriorate rapidly during the afternoon rains.
- If you want volcanic glow or nighttime photos, only attempt a guided evening observation and confirm it is allowed that night - conditions and park rules change with activity levels, so follow your guide's instructions.
