Retezat Mountains
Mountains Romanian mountain range featuring glacial lakes and peaks
The Retezat Mountains host Romania’s Retezat National Park with glacial lakes, alpine meadows and marked trails; hikers come for multi‑day routes, endemic flora and remote mountain huts.
The Retezat Mountains are a compact glaciated massif in the Southern Carpathians of Romania, noted for high peaks and numerous glacial lakes. The range includes Romania’s first designated national park and is a key area for alpine flora and mountain hiking.
The area features a concentration of cirque lakes and rugged ridgelines; the largest lake basin, Bucura, sits above 2,000 meters and is a common overnight spot for multi-day treks. Peaks exceed 2,500 meters, with Peleaga the highest at 2,509 meters, and trails of varying difficulty link mountain huts and cols.
Modern protection began in the 1930s when the core massif received formal park status to conserve its lakes, forests, and alpine habitats; subsequent conservation measures have focused on limiting development and preserving traditional grazing and hiking use. The landscape bears evidence of past glaciation in its U-shaped valleys and lake basins.
Geographically the Retezat Mountains lie in southwestern Romania within the Southern Carpathians, mainly in Hunedoara and nearby counties, roughly 50-150 kilometers from regional centers such as Deva and Hunedoara depending on access route. The massif rises above surrounding valleys and is accessed by forest roads and marked mountain trails.
- Glacial lakes: Contains around 80 glacial lakes scattered across the massif, with numerous marked trails connecting alpine passes and summits.
- Highest peak: Peleaga is the highest point at 2,509 meters, offering the most commonly sought summit view in the range.
What to See #
- Bucura Lake: Bucura Lake is the largest glacial lake in the massif, situated at about 2030 meters altitude and commonly used as a base for hikes into the central Retezat peaks.
- Peleaga peak: Peleaga is the highest summit in the range, reaching 2,509 meters and forming the main ridge visible from many access trails.
- Retezat National Park: Retezat National Park, Romania's first national park established to protect the massif, includes most of the glacial lake basins and alpine habitats of the range.
Tips for Visiting Retezat Mountains #
- Plan summer trips (mid‑June to early September) for mostly snow‑free trails and accessible high‑altitude passes; outside that window many routes remain snowbound.
- Start early from established trailheads (for example routes that lead to Bucura Lake) and allow at least two days to reach alpine lakes and ridges - the scenery rewards multi‑day routes rather than quick turnarounds.
- Book mountain huts or campsites in advance during peak season and consult the Retezat National Park visitor information so you follow marked trails and the park's conservation rules.
