Resafa
Ruins Ancient Byzantine and Umayyad desert city with ruins
Ancient Resafa preserves large fortified ruins on the Syrian desert steppe, once a Roman-Byzantine frontier town and later a medieval pilgrimage site. Visitors study archaeological remains, ruined walls and the site’s desert context.
Resafa (historically Sergiopolis) is an archaeological and fortified site in Raqqa Governorate in northern Syria, known for its large city walls, citadel and its association with the cult of Saint Sergius. The site was an important pilgrimage and defensive centre in late antiquity and the early medieval period.
On site visitors can see the remains of the citadel, stretches of the defensive wall circuit and the ruins of a basilica that marked the town’s religious centre. The spatial layout and surviving masonry reflect long occupation with visible elements from Byzantine and later phases.
The town grew in importance under Roman and Byzantine rule as a fortified stop in the Syrian steppe and as a shrine dedicated to Saint Sergius; it later continued in use under early Islamic administrations and experienced phases of rebuilding and reuse. Its function shifted over time between pilgrimage, military control and regional settlement.
Resafa sits on a low hill on the edge of the Syrian Desert within Raqqa Governorate, positioned in the steppe landscape that historically linked inland caravan and military routes.
- Surviving monumental remains: Notable for visible Byzantine-era masonry and later reuse, with a substantial walled circuit and a central fortress still extant on the archaeological site.
