Reindeer Lake
Lake Large subarctic lake on Saskatchewan-Manitoba border
Reindeer Lake sits in northern Saskatchewan with vast shoreline, sport fishing for lake trout and pike, fly-in lodges and remote canoe routes through boreal forest.
Reindeer Lake is a large freshwater lake in northern Saskatchewan, Canada, lying close to the Saskatchewan-Manitoba border and occupying a major area of boreal wilderness. It is one of the largest lakes in the province and is notable for its remote island-dotted shoreline.
The lake is used for outdoor recreation and wilderness tourism - fishing lodges, boating, hunting and fly-in camps are common. Anglers target species such as walleye and northern pike, and the lake’s many bays and islands are popular for multi-day boat trips and backcountry camps.
Indigenous peoples have used the lake and its shores for centuries for fishing and travel; during the fur-trade era the waterways were part of regional trade routes. More recent decades have seen development of recreational lodges and maintained outposts rather than large settlements.
Geographically it sits in the boreal forest of north-central Canada; the nearest small community on the lake is Southend at the southern end. The surrounding landscape is a mix of rocky shorelines, forest and many islands, with access from regional roads and by air to remote lodges.
- Fishing: Well-known for sport fishing - regular catches include walleye (pickerel) and northern pike, with many camps and lodges oriented to anglers.
- Access: Access is by road to small communities such as Southend and by floatplane to remote lodges and islands; boat travel is the main way to reach interior bays and camps.
Tips for Visiting Reindeer Lake #
- Plan for summer (mid-June through early September) when the lake is ice‑free and lodges/boat access are operating; weather is calmer and fishing/paddling conditions are best then.
- Treat Reindeer Lake as a remote destination - many outfitters operate floatplane transfers and wilderness lodges, so coordinate arrivals/flight windows with your operator and book transfers well in advance.
- Don't focus only on fishing: allow time to explore the lake's island chains and shoreline by canoe or boat and to visit nearby northern communities for local culture and guided wildlife viewing, which many day visitors miss.
Best Time to Visit Reindeer Lake #
Go in summer for boating and fishing; winter offers frozen-lake activities but extreme cold and access challenges.
