Fort Mughal-era fortress complex in Delhi, historic ceremonies held
Shah Jahan’s 17th-century Red Fort in Delhi is a walled Mughal citadel with museums, audience halls and ornate marble inlays. Tourists arrive for guided history, the evening light shows and the annual Independence Day flag-raising.
The Red Fort in Delhi is a 17th-century Mughal fort complex built as the palace and administrative seat for the Mughal emperor Shah Jahan. Construction of the main fortifications began in the 1630s and the complex is noted for its red sandstone walls and imperial halls.
Key internal attractions include the ceremonial Diwan-i-Aam, the private Diwan-i-Khas, ornate pavilions and residential chambers, along with large gates such as the Lahori Gate. Several on-site museums exhibit artefacts and the fort’s historic architecture.
Shah Jahan commissioned the fort in the 1630s as a new capital complex; it served as the Mughal imperial residence and administrative center through the 18th century and later saw modifications during British rule. It was inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2007.
The fort stands on the banks of the Yamuna River in Old Delhi, adjacent to the Chandni Chowk market area and easily reached from central Delhi by road and metro.
- Independence Day ceremonies: India's prime minister traditionally raises the national flag here on Independence Day each 15 August, drawing large crowds.
- Visitor information: The fort complex includes on-site museums showing Mughal-era artifacts and the fort's architectural features, open to visitors during daytime hours.

How to Get to Red Fort #
The Red Fort is in Old Delhi on the banks of the Yamuna. The Lal Qila (Red Fort) metro station on the Delhi Metro provides direct access and is a very short walk; Chandni Chowk (Yellow Line) is also within about a 10-15 minute walk. From Indira Gandhi International Airport the Red Fort is roughly 20-25 km away (typically 45-60 minutes by car depending on traffic), and taxis/auto-rickshaws are the easiest way to reach the fort from nearby areas.
Tips for Visiting Red Fort #
- Arrive via the Chandni Chowk metro station and enter through the Lahori Gate to avoid Delhi traffic and the limited parking around the fort; the walk from the station is short and drops you at the main entrance.
- Buy tickets online or at the official counter for a morning entry to avoid the midday heat and large tour groups; security checks can add time, so factor that into your schedule.
- Set aside time to walk the fort ramparts and visit the on-site museums - the archaeological and arms displays inside are often overlooked by visitors who only spend time at the Red Fort's exterior façades.
