How to Get to Real de Catorce
Real de Catorce is a remote mountain village reached by road from Matehuala; most visitors fly into San Luis Potosí (SLP) and continue by bus to Matehuala, then by colectivo or 4x4 to the town. The last stretch is an uphill mountain road and requires a vehicle suited to the terrain.
Ponciano Arriaga International Airport / San Luis Potosí (SLP): San Luis Potosí airport is the main gateway for visitors to Real de Catorce. From SLP you can take an ADO or other long‑distance bus to Matehuala (approximately 2.5-3.5 hours) and then a local colectivo or four‑wheel‑drive transfer to Real de Catorce (about 45-75 minutes up the mountain).
Monclova / Saltillo (regional airports): These regional airports have limited services; most international visitors use San Luis Potosí. If arriving at a regional airport expect an additional bus or shuttle transfer to Matehuala or San Luis Potosí before continuing to Real de Catorce.
Train: There is no direct passenger rail service to Real de Catorce; rail is not a practical option for the final approach.
Bus: ADO and other intercity bus operators run services to Matehuala from San Luis Potosí, Monterrey and Mexico City. From Matehuala minibuses, colectivos or arranged 4x4 trucks run up the unpaved ascent into Real de Catorce (the last section involves a tunnel/steep road). Expect the Matehuala→Real de Catorce leg to take 45-75 minutes.
How to Get Around Real de Catorce #
Real de Catorce is a compact, historic mining town best explored on foot once you arrive-the steep, cobbled streets aren’t suited to much traffic. Access is commonly via the Ogarrio tunnel and a rough road; some visitors use colectivos (shared jeeps) from Matehuala or park outside and transfer by 4x4. Roads can be rough and rainy-season conditions make a high-clearance vehicle preferable. Bring cash; card acceptance is limited and services are basic in town.
