Rayen Citadel (Arg-e Rayen) is a large mudbrick (adobe) fortress complex in Kerman province, southeastern Iran, notable for its state of preservation compared with similar earthen citadels.
The citadel has roots in Iran’s long adobe-building tradition; while its origins are ancient, much of the visible fabric dates from later medieval and post-medieval rebuilding and repair. It has been continuously recognized as an important traditional settlement type and has received conservation attention in modern times.
Rayen Citadel stands near the town of Rayen in Kerman province, in the arid region of southeastern Iran, set within a landscape of desert plains and distant mountains.
