Raung
Mountains Stratovolcano in East Java known for eruptions
An active stratovolcano on East Java’s eastern rim, Raung draws hikers for pre-dawn treks to watch the crater steam and to catch sunrise over nearby volcanic cones and the Java Sea.
Raung is a large stratovolcano on the eastern side of Java in Indonesia, known for its broad, deep crater and persistent volcanic activity. Its summit rises to about 3,332 metres and is a prominent feature of the surrounding highland landscape.
Hikers and trekkers visit for sunrise views from the crater rim and for highland landscapes that include steep ridges and agricultural terraces below the upper slopes. Treks usually involve an overnight approach from nearby regency towns and require local guides because of steep terrain and changing weather.
Raung has been an active volcano in historic times, with frequent eruptions that produce volcanic ash and occasional larger explosive events. Local authorities monitor activity and issue advisories when ash affects populated areas and aviation.
Geographically the volcano straddles regency boundaries in East Java and dominates the skyline above nearby towns and plantations; access is by roads from regional towns followed by mountain tracks to trailheads.
- Elevation: Summit elevation is about 3,332 metres, making it one of Java's higher volcanic peaks.
- Volcanic activity: Features a large summit crater roughly 1-2 kilometres across and produces frequent ash plumes; eruptions can disrupt air traffic and local agriculture.
Tips for Visiting Raung #
- Start your Raung trek very early (overnight to the upper ridge or pre‑dawn ascent) to reach the rim for sunrise, when weather and visibility are most reliable and clouds often sit below the summit.
- Hire a local guide and a 4x4 for the approach roads-trailheads and tracks are rough, conditions change quickly, and local operators know the best staging points and current crater‑access restrictions.
- Check current volcanic alerts and crater access before you go; volcanic gas and ash can close the rim unexpectedly, and local guides will know safe lookout spots that still give dramatic views without lingering in hazardous zones.
