Rathlin Island
Island Offshore Northern Irish island with important seabird colonies
A short ferry from Ballycastle, Rathlin Island draws birdwatchers to its sea-cliff colonies-puffins and guillemots in summer-and walkers to coastal trails, quiet bays, and a small fishing community with local seafood.
Rathlin Island is an inhabited island off the north coast of County Antrim in Northern Ireland, known for its wildlife and maritime heritage. It is the only inhabited island off the coast of Northern Ireland and has a small permanent community.
Visitors come for seabird watching, coastal walks and the island’s remote coastal scenery; colonies of puffins and other seabirds attract seasonal wildlife tourism. The island has a single main village with basic services and a small number of holiday accommodations.
Rathlin has a long recorded history including medieval events and the well-documented 1575 attack often referred to as the Rathlin Island massacre. Historically it has been used for fishing, grazing and as a strategic coastal outpost.
The island lies off the north coast of County Antrim; regular ferry services run from Ballycastle on the mainland and crossing times depend on weather and the vessel used.
- Wildlife: The island supports significant seabird colonies, including puffins and razorbills, and has an RSPB presence during the breeding season.
- Access: Ferry services operate from Ballycastle on the County Antrim coast and are the normal way to reach the island, weather permitting.
What to See #
- Church Bay: Church Bay is the main village and ferry landing with visitor facilities, shops and accommodation; it is the usual arrival point for visitors to the island.
- Seabird cliffs / nature reserves: Cliff and coastal areas around the island, especially near the West Light, host important seabird colonies and RSPB-managed reserves.
How to Get to Rathlin Island #
Rathlin Island is reached by ferry from Ballycastle (County Antrim). Drive or take public transport to Ballycastle harbour and board the scheduled Rathlin ferry; the crossing is a short regular service (around 20-30 minutes) and there is also a seasonal helicopter service from Ballycastle. On arrival at Rathlin, the main harbour is a short walk to the visitor facilities and walking trails.
Tips for Visiting Rathlin Island #
- Take the ferry from Ballycastle and check the seasonal timetable in advance - sailings are limited and subject to weather, so plan your return slot before you explore the island.
- Visit early in the day or on weekdays to get quieter walking paths and better chances of seeing seabird colonies; the West Lighthouse and viewing points are best for birdwatching when there's minimal visitor disturbance.
- Make a stop at the local visitor centre (or RSPB facilities when open) to learn where the island's puffin and seabird viewing areas are - small hides and headland viewpoints are easy to miss without local guidance.
Best Time to Visit Rathlin Island #
Late spring to early summer (May-July) is the best time to visit Rathlin Island for wildlife, especially seabird colonies, and the most reliable ferry access.
