Rathauspark borders Vienna’s neo‑Gothic City Hall; visitors stroll lawns, view memorials and attend seasonal markets and concerts on Rathausplatz.
Rathauspark is a public park in central Vienna immediately beside the city’s City Hall (Rathaus). It forms part of the Ringstrasse-era ensemble around the Rathaus and Rathausplatz.
The park and its pathways, lawns and planted trees serve as the setting for several large seasonal events held on the adjoining Rathausplatz. Notable regular events include the summer Vienna Film Festival and the Christmas market in winter, both of which concentrate visitors on the square in front of the City Hall.
The City Hall next to the park was designed by Friedrich von Schmidt and built between 1872 and 1883; the park area is part of the wider 19th century Ringstrasse redevelopment of central Vienna. Over time the space has been used for public recreation and as an events perimeter for civic celebrations.
The park sits in Innere Stadt, central Vienna, directly adjacent to the Rathaus and Rathausplatz, within walking distance of other central landmarks such as the Burgtheater and the University of Vienna.

How to Get to Rathauspark #
Rathauspark sits immediately in front of Vienna City Hall (Rathaus) on Rathausplatz. Take the U2 subway to Rathaus station - the park is a one- to two‑minute walk from the station exits.
You can also reach Rathausplatz on the Ring tram lines that run along Ringstraße (tram lines 1 and 2 and the D tram serve stops near the City Hall). If arriving from Wien Hauptbahnhof, take the U2 one stop north to Rathaus.
Tips for Visiting Rathauspark #
- Aim for early mornings or weekday visits to Rathauspark to enjoy the lawns and the Rathaus façade with far fewer tourists and event crowds.
- Use the Rathausplatz side for the most direct access to the Rathaus and market/activity areas; approach from Universitätsring or the university side if you prefer quieter paths and fewer crowds.
- Check Vienna's event calendar before you go - Rathausplatz is the city's main event site (notably the Christmas market and summer festivals) and events close large parts of the park and dramatically increase visitor numbers.
