Raseborg Castle
Castle Medieval coastal castle ruins overlooking the Gulf
On the Raseborg archipelago, Raseborg Castle’s medieval stone ruins sit beside the sea; visitors reach it by road or boat for ruins, cliff views and summer historical events.
Raseborg Castle (Raaseporin linna) is a medieval fortress ruin located on an island in the archipelago of Uusimaa in southern Finland. The original fortress dates from the medieval period and later served regional defensive and administrative roles under Swedish rule.
Visitors encounter stone curtain walls, the remains of towers and an inner courtyard that outline the original castle plan. The ruins are interpreted for visitors with signage and occasional exhibitions on the site’s medieval history, and the island offers viewpoints over the surrounding sea and archipelago.
The castle was constructed in the Middle Ages and saw alterations and decline over subsequent centuries before becoming a preserved ruin. Archaeological work and conservation have stabilized sections of the remains and made the site accessible for tourism.
Raseborg sits in the outer archipelago off the southwestern coast of Finland, near the town of Ekenäs (Tammisaari) in the municipality of Raseborg, roughly within driving and ferry distance from the Helsinki region.
- Origins: Originally constructed in the medieval period by Swedish authorities, the castle later fell into ruin and today survives as ruins on an island in the Raseborg archipelago.
- Access: Accessible by short boat trips from the nearby town of Ekenäs (Tammisaari) in summer months, the ruins are a regional heritage attraction in Uusimaa.
What to See #
- Curtain walls: The ruined curtain walls and tower bases that mark the defensive perimeter of the medieval castle and provide vantage points over the surrounding archipelago.
- Inner courtyard: The central inner courtyard area where domestic and administrative buildings once stood; today it is an open ruin used for interpretation and events.
- Site interpretation: The site perimeter and small museum displays that interpret the castle's history and archaeological finds from excavations.
Tips for Visiting Raseborg Castle #
- Visit later in the afternoon for softer light on the ruins and fewer day‑trip crowds from Helsinki; the site's hilltop position makes late light especially photogenic.
- Follow the marked paths from the town center and check for seasonal guided tours - independent visitors often miss interpretive signage and the best viewpoints that guides point out.
