Raqch’i is an Inca archaeological complex in the Cusco Department of Peru known for its large temple dedicated to the deity Wiracocha and for extensive surrounding constructions. The ruins combine monumental religious architecture with storage and administrative buildings.

The complex is notable for the massive rectangular adobe temple and adjacent rows of storehouses and foundations that formed part of an organized provincial center. Visitors commonly view the temple remains, storehouse lines and traces of Inca road connections.

Built during the Inca period, the site functioned as a religious, administrative and logistical hub within the Inca state. Archaeological study has identified its role in regional governance and ritual practice during the 15th and early 16th centuries.

Raqch’i lies in the Cusco Department of southern Peru, situated along the highland corridor used historically between Cusco and other Andean regions. It is accessible by road from nearby towns within the department.

  • Site function: The site includes both religious and administrative elements typical of an Inca provincial center, visible in the temple, storehouses and road-related structures.

What to See #

  • Temple of Wiracocha: A large rectangular adobe structure referred to as the Temple of Wiracocha dominates the site and served religious functions within the complex. It is the most visually striking surviving Inca building at Raqch'i.
  • Qullqas and administrative compounds: Surrounding the temple are rows of circular and rectangular storehouses, administrative buildings and foundation remains that indicate the site's role as a regional Inca center.

How to Get to Raqch'i #

Raqch’i sits on the main road between Cusco and Puno (approximately 110-130 km southeast of Cusco). Most visitors reach it by car or tourist bus on the Cusco-Puno route; the drive from Cusco takes roughly 3-4 hours. There are small local buses that stop at the turnoff for the site; otherwise arrange transport from Sicuani or Cusco.

Tips for Visiting Raqch'i #

  • Combine Raqch'i with a stop at nearby Andahuaylillas (the 'Sistine Chapel of the Andes') and Sicuani on the Cusco-Puno road to make the drive worthwhile.
  • Arrive in the morning to avoid long tour-bus visits and to see the low-angle light bring out the textures of the adobe walls.
  • Bring warm layers-the site sits high on the Andean plateau and mornings can be chilly even in the dry season.
  • Hire a local guide at the entrance: the Inca road system and the purpose of the circular storehouses make more sense with someone who can point out details.
