Rangitoto Island
Island Volcanic island near Auckland with distinctive volcanic cone
Rangitoto rises from the Hauraki Gulf near Auckland as a young volcanic cone; day‑hikers cross lava fields to a summit lookout and observe native coastal vegetation.
Rangitoto Island is a volcanic island in the Hauraki Gulf just off Auckland, New Zealand, and is the youngest and largest volcano in the Auckland volcanic field. Its most recent eruption occurred roughly 600 years ago, producing the distinctive lava fields that dominate much of the island.
A popular day-trip destination, the island offers a well-marked track to the summit at about 259 metres above sea level and routes across large, exposed lava fields. Visitors also find regenerating native pohutukawa forest, coastal viewpoints and panoramic vistas back to central Auckland, around 8 kilometres to the south-west.
The island is managed for conservation and recreation; vehicle access is not permitted and visitor facilities are limited to basic amenities at the ferry landing and waymarked trails. Ferry services run from Auckland and regular walking routes link the wharf to the summit ridge.
- Access: Ferry services operate from central Auckland; the crossing typically takes around 25 to 35 minutes depending on the service and weather.
- Time needed: Allow two to three hours for a return walk from the wharf to the summit and back, longer if you explore multiple tracks and the coastline.
What to See #
- Summit: The highest point on the island, rising to about 259 metres above sea level, reached by a marked walking track that gives panoramic views over the Hauraki Gulf and Auckland city.
- Lava fields: Extensive, fresh-looking lava fields and basalt crust left by the last eruption about 600 years ago, crossed by boardwalks and walking trails.
- Native forest and coastline: Coastal fringes and regenerating native forest dominated by pohutukawa and other native species that recolonised the island after the eruption.
